Janet Stansfield Hess

Janet graduated from Central High School in 1989 and grew up in the family business, Stansfield Vending, where she started by washing company cars and then moved up to the kitchen where she made sandwiches. Her father never pushed her to remain in the family business. In fact, he encouraged her to move out of La Crosse and experience the world. Janet went to college at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she graduated in 1993 with a degree in Business Administration. After college, she moved to Minneapolis to work for Dayton Hudson Corporation, but the desire she developed at UW-Madison to study Business Ethics pushed her to pursue her MBA at the University of Washington in Seattle, where she graduated in 1997. After completing her MBA program, Janet and her husband Troy moved back to La Crosse and she began her career with Stansfield Vending. She had no formal job title, so her responsibilities at the company included a little bit of everything. She credits that variety with her earning the respect of other employees at Stansfield. In 2001, when her sister Julie joined the company, the two became the third generation owners of Stansfield Vending, which their grandparents began in 1942 in Winona, Minnesota. At the height of their business, Stansfield Vending employed 225 people with three branches across Wisconsin. Janet currently serves as President of the company. As President, she is a very hands-on leader. They have sold the vending division of the business and currently the company is about the size it was thirty years ago.

Janet’s husband Troy, her high school sweetheart, previously was an English instructor at Viterbo University, and currently works at Express Printing. They have three children; Abby, age 15, a freshmen at Onalaska High School, Julia, age 12 a 6th grader at Onalaska Middle School, and Carly, age 7 a 1st grader at Eagle Bluff Elementary School.

Janet’s family has a long tradition at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater La Crosse. Both her grandfather and father saw the value in the Boys and Girls Club assuring the youth of La Crosse had a place to go and grow up healthy. They gave both financially and in-kind support by providing quality pool equipment such as pool tables, cues, and balls in the Club’s game rooms. That tradition continues today under Janet’s leadership and has expanded to other areas of need. Janet was then asked to sit on the Amie L. Mathy Club Board, which is a board that oversees the Mathy Boys and Girls Club and Viterbo partnership. Janet was instrumental in the challenge of integrating the collegiate Viterbo culture with the Boys and Girls Club mission. This project has become a model nationally.

In addition to her significant contribution to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater La Crosse, Janet also serves on the Board of Directors for Trust Point, and has been involved with the YMCA’s Pioneering Healthier Communities program, where she received the Nancy Quinlisk Social Responsibility Award in 2001. Janet’s Wall of Fame induction is an honor of commitment to the La Crosse community.
