Don Klich

Don Klich, born December 3, 1924 in La Crosse, was the second born of three children.

From the time he was 11 years old, Don spent his summers working on farms and at resorts in the Wisconsin area. After graduating from Central High School in 1942, he began his first job in the electrical field for an electrical contractor. Soon after, Don entered the Navy where he served during WWII Submarine Vets. After his discharge he returned home and married his wife, the former Shirley Saltz. They celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary this past June.

Again, Don began working for a local electrical contractor and in 1961, Don started his own business, still known as Klich Electric. Don and Shirley’s two children, Ron and Barb also worked in the family business. Klich Electric has wired many buildings in the area, including Winona Area Technical College, Logan High School, The Radisson Hotel, the YMCA, Lakeview Health Center, and the La Crosse Tribune, to name just a few.

Don was instrumental in enlisting several local electrical contractors, electricians, and electrical supply houses to donate materials and labor for the present La Crosse Boys’ & Girls’ Club. Don and Ron donated many hours planning and wiring the building, and continue to help and support the club.

Don’s first grandson, Kevin, began playing basketball at the age of six at the Club located in the old St. John’s Church building. This fostered Don’s keen interest in the local youth activities.

During his free time, Don enjoys golfing with his special group of buddies ever Thursday and Saturday. Golf is invariable followed by his yarn spinning tails, and legendary sense of humor. Don has been an avid fisherman and hunter over the years and just recently returned from a successful hunting trip with his son, son-in-law, and grandson.

Don has been a devoted member for over 50 years of Immanuel Lutheran Church and a strong proponent of the church, school, and Luther High School. Don was honored to receive the Boys’ and Girls’ Club Man and Youth Award in 1995.

Don is respected by his business associates and revered by his friends and family. He lives with a zest for life, with love for his wife, children, and grandchildren, and with affection for his friends.
