Mike Horstman

Mike Horstman was born in 1967 to Roger and Virginia. Mike is a proud alumnus of Aquinas High School, graduating with the Class of 1986. During his time at Aquinas, Mike was actively involved in track, cross country and football. 


Following high school, Mike attended the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse and Western Wisconsin Technical College. He graduated in 1989 with a degree in Criminal Justice. While in college, he was active the Criminal Justice Organization and earned academic honors by making the Dean’s List.


After graduating from college, Mike began his career with the La Crosse County Sheriff’s Office, initially serving as a Correctional Officer in the County Jail. After 14 months, he was promoted to Patrol Deputy, beginning a long and impactful journey through the ranks. In 1997, Mike was promoted to Law Enforcement Sergeant, supervising both in the Jail and Patrol Division. His leadership continued to shine, and in 2001, he was named Law Enforcement Captain, overseeing Patrol, Court Services, Training, and Community Services. In 2019, Mike reached the role of Chief Deputy, a position he continues to serve in to this day.



Beyond his professional achievements, Mike was a devoted husband to his wife, Sheila, and a proud father to their children: Zach, Jacob, and Elizabeth. His commitment to community service extends far beyond the workplace. He has served on numerous boards and committees, including the Wisconsin Sheriff’s & Deputy Sheriff’s Board of Directors, the Local Emergency Planning Committee, the Joint Board of Harbor Commissioners and many more.


Mike’s dedication to the Boys & Girls Club has been especially impactful. From 2006 to 2020, he served on the Club’s Board of Directors, including terms as Vice President and President. As a volunteer coach for five years in football and baseball, Mike helped shape the lives of young athletes, including his own children, who were active participants in BGC athletics. In recognition of his service, Mike was honored as the Boys & Girls Club Backer of the Year in 2005 and received the Distinguished Service Award in 2013. Today, he continues his involvement through the Club’s Safety Committee.


Mike Horstman’s lifelong dedication to service has impacted countless lives and has helped shape a safer and stronger community for all.
