George C. Nixon

George Nixon became involved in Boys Club work in 1956 when Mr. Herbert Hoover invited him to be a National Board Member for Boys Clubs of America. After witnessing the impact of the Boys Club movement in other communities, George became engrossed with the idea of getting a club started in La Crosse. In late 1964, a steering committee was formed which served as the basis for the original Boys Club. Through George’s leadership, funds were raised to open the clubs in the old Auto Lite Building in June of 1966.

In 1971, George was elected President of the club. His boundless energy and positive attitude stimulated the board to look to the future in an attempt to reach more young people in the area. In 1973, he was elected as Vice President and continues to serve in that position to this day.

Through the years, George has received numerous civic awards and honors. In the year 1979, the club saluted him naming it “George Nixon Year”. He is truly the most significant person in the founding of the Boys Club.
